This week saw the passing of a country great -- Johnny Wright, husband of Kitty Wells and one-half of the legendary country duo Johnnie & Jack.
The pair helped influence everyone from the Everly Brothers to Bob Dylan (who covered their songs live in the early 2000s). If you haven't heard Johnnie & Jack sing "Poison Love," "You Tried to Ruin My Name," or "Ashes of Love," you're missing out.
But for now the spotlight is on Wright, and this time capsule from 1968 -- "Hello Vietnam." It was Wright's first solo record, and its tale of lovers separated by a draft notice spent three weeks at number one. Unlike most songs about the conflict, it refuses to toe a party line -- mixing regret, duty, fear, and resignation in equal measure.
